South African High Court Nixes Online Gambling
South African online gambling operators can face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of R10 million or both for running casinos, a Gauteng High Court has ruled. This puts an end to a long debate regarding the status of internet gambling in the country.
The Gauteng Gambling Board put out a media statement clarifying the legal status of online gambling in South Africa.
“That's why we approached the media to alert them of the judgment which makes online casino operations illegal, and if they continue we will have them arrested and fight for conviction,” said the Head of Legal Services for the Gambling Board, Lucky Lukhwareni.
Online gambling operators have vowed to continue service South African gamblers, who spend millions wagering on the internet each year.
