Belgium - New Gambling Laws
While the Belgium government states that its new gambling laws were set in place in order to protect consumers, a number of pro-gambling groups in Europe have challenged this argument by lodging a complaint through the European Commission.
The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA and Remote Gambling Association (RGA) say that the government’s demands that operators have a live presence in the Belgium market, leaves out the majority of online operators who want to compete in the market.
“If consumer protection was the real concern, licenses would be granted on the basis of objective criteria assessing the social responsibility of operators,” said Clive Hawkswood, CEO of the RGA.
“Unfortunately, the current system only aims at protecting a handful of existing land-based operators from meaningful competition. "
