UIGEA Implementation Delayed
US Online Poker players and casino gamblers celebrate when the US Treasury announced that the UIGEA is delayed for a further six months.
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) may be on its way out after the US Treasury surprisingly delayed the law’s implementation for six months after much pressure was applied to the government.
Pro gambling groups are now scrambling to use the time granted to push anti-UIGEA bills, led by Barney Frank.
“The Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors deserve a great deal of credit for suspending these midnight regulations promulgated by the Bush administration which would curtail the freedom of Americans to use the internet as they choose and which would pose unrealistic burdens on the entire financial community,” said Frank.
“This will give us a chance to act in an unhurried manner on my legislation to undo this regulatory excess by the Bush administration and to undo this ill-advised law,” he added.
For the moment it seems that online poker players and Casino fans can relax and continue to enjoy playing online. However, with the US laws being unclear regarding what's acceptable, we're sure it won't be long before something else rears and we'll be back reporting the gambling situation in the US.
