Denmark to Introduce Gambling Reforms
The Danish gambling monopoly, Danske Spil, will finally lose its strong hold on the country’s market after sixty years, after the government announced that it would be deregulating the market and introducing sweeping changes.
Foreign operators would now be allowed to apply for licenses, advertise their products and compete on a level playing field.
“It will be nice to get some clarity on the issue after so many years of uncertainty,” said the MD of Danske Spil, H.C. Madsen. “We'll also be able to offer casino gambling and poker now, which we couldn't do before.”
It makes sense for Denmark to follow EU recommendations on unrestricted cross-market selling and the sweeping reforms will set a competitive market in a country known for its gaming tendancies. Many online casino and poker operators will be looking to enter Denmark in a more open fashion but retrospectively, Denmark, having taken down the barriers, can go after the rest of the European marketshare.
