EU Suggests Changes in US Gambling Policy
Should US citizens be allowed to gamble online? The debate continues with the European Union, this week, commenting that the US's gambling policy is discriminatory and unjustified."
After several months of investigating the US online gambling market, following a request from the Remote Gambling Association, the European Commission has released a preliminary report, calling the US’s gambling policy ‘discriminatory and unjustified’.
“It is for the US to decide how best to regulate internet gambling in its market,” said the European Union Trade Commissioner, Catherine Ashton, “but this must be done in a way that fully respects WTO obligations. I am hopeful that we can find a swift, negotiated solution to this issue.”
The EU now seem to be making a move on ensuring that EU based companies can advertise their gambling wares in the US which has been out of bounds since the implementation of the UIGEA. The argument that the EU community have is that if US based and controlled companies can target EU facing customers, then laws allowing the same the other way around should prevail.
With the inauguration of President Obama to the US Presidency, many think that the laws will slowly change and that gambling in the US will be made available online. However, one thing's for sure - it's going to be a lengthy and drawn out process.
