French Gambling Market to Open Up in 2009
The French government is finally bowing to pressure from the European Commission.
After meeting with the EU Internal Market’s Commissioner Charlie McGreevy, the country’s Budget Minister Eric Woerth announced that France would be opening up its gambling market to private operators from 2009, albeit under strict conditions.
The government will still maintain a share of the €5.3 billion revenue that is generated through gambling by keeping the state run monopolies PMU and Francaise des Jeuxs up and running.
