France Eyes Sportsbetting
According to the French media, the country may be heading for gambling regulation and legalization sooner than expected as France Eyes Sportsbetting Legalization.
The French Budget Minister, Eric Woerth, has made recommendations to the Sarkozy government to gradually legalize sportsbetting, in a way that the state-run PMU would maintain its monopoly by organizing the bets, while private companies could market them.
Only companies that adhere to strict requirement should be considered for licenses, he said. It is thought that this move comes to appease the European Union, which is putting pressure on France to relax its gambling laws in accordance open-border EU treaties.
