PaddyPower Ads Banned from the Underground
PaddyPower, the Irish-based gambling company, has had another of its advertisements banned by the UK Advertising Standards Agency. The company produced two poster advertisements that were meant for the London Underground network and targeted women gamblers. The ads, which featured, among others, a man attempting to breastfeed a child with the caption, “Where have all the women gone?,” were considered too controversial by the ASA and trashed before they could be displayed. Paddy Power has called for the general public to debate whether these ads should indeed be banned, by opening a website on the issue.

Online Search Engines Settle with US Authorities over Gambling Promotion
Three of the biggest search engines on the internet, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! have announced a multi-million dollar settlement with US authorities regarding their role in the promotion of online gambling over the past decade. The three companies entered into a plea-bargain whereby they will not have to admit any wrongdoing, in return for penalty payments. Microsoft will need to pay out over $21-million, $7.5-million of which will be directed to the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In addition, both Microsoft and Google agreed to fund public-service campaigns on the internet explaining the dangers of underage gambling. In total, the US authorities have forced the three to pay out over $31.5-million in forfeitures, in addition to the $40-million that it has managed to collect in back taxes and penalties from other operators in the past couple of years.

PartyGaming Picks Four New Directors
PartyGaming, the UK-listed gambling company, announced this week that it has appointed four new directors. These include Emilio Gomez and John Davy as non-executive directors and representatives of the company’s founders, as well as Stephen Box (financial director of National Grid until 2002) and British life peer, Lord Moonie. PartyGaming is taking these steps in an effort to move away from the financial crisis it finds itself in, after the UIGEA in the United States forced it to lose a big portion of its customer base.
