Seven Card Stud Etiquette
While it may not appear so on the surface, etiquette at
a poker table has strategic implications. No one wants to
play with a total jerk, and if there is no one to play the
game with, then you cannot make any money. Play with class,
show some manners, and you will be respected for it.
Be Personable
Daniel Negreanu, one of the top poker players in the world
today, has cultivated an image of being a friendly, personable
guy at the poker table. He also uses this to his advantage
in his poker strategy. He laughs, he smiles, he chats, he
tells jokes, and he generally treats the other players like
he wants them to be there, whether they are fellow pros
or just hacks in town for some gambling and a show.
Daniel plays extremely good poker while being friendly
at the same time, and the really crazy thing is people seem
to be less bothered when they lose their money to him. After
all, if you are going to lose your money, why would you
want it going to a jerk? It may as well be in the nice guy's
hands. This translates into people staying around to play
longer, which means more profits for the friendly player.
Of course as well as this, people will open up more to the
nice player and it'll help your poker playing strategy as
you're able to spot more poker
tells!
Celebration
Over the last several years, online
poker has contributed to a rather new phenomenon: outlandish
victory celebrations. When you are playing online in the
comfort of your own home, of course, it is perfectly acceptable
to yell, jump, clap and do a jig when you win a large pot.
The computer will not care.
In live play, however, that is a real person you just won
that huge pit from, and they are sitting right next to you.
I'm sure they do not appreciate your rendition of The Running
Man as they watch the dealer push all their chips to you.
It is OK to be happy, after all, you just won a bunch of
money, but this is not the NFL, and you did not just score
a touchdown. A simple clap or fist pump will do, then get
ready for the next hand. Try not to act like it's the first
pot you have ever won (even if it is). This is one of the
most important lessons in general poker etiquette.
Dealers
It is customary to tip the dealer after winning a hand.
Of course, this rule doesn't apply to online Seven Card
Stud nor poker strategy, but if you thought it did maybe
the complexity of poker isn't really for you!
A huge tip is not necessary, usually just a dollar or two
will do (unless you are playing pretty high stakes, in which
case, what are you reading this for?) This is of course
not a concern in online poker, but it failing to tip is
a common faux pas made by online players when switching
to live play. As with any service, do not feel compelled
to tip if you do not think the dealer's performance has
been adequate. Do not blame him for the cards, of course,
but if he has been rude or has made several mistakes, you
are not obligated to tip. Hold on to your chips instead.
These are just a few simple etiquette tips.
The poker world has its own entire social system, complete
with a code of etiquette and ethics. These three things
will help get you by in the short term. Most of the other
points can be learned whilst at the tables.
